The Quickway Isn't Always the Best Way

I had to get dropped off at work a little early the other day and decided to walk over to the Quickway Food Mart located at 1604 Montgomery St for a breakfast burrito. This is basically a convenience store with a little grill called the Quick Pick Deli that churns out burgers and hot dogs at lunch. The burgers are delicious BTW.

I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon, eggs, cheese, and beans.

It reminded me a lot of Joey from Friends. It looked really good on the outside, but once you got to know it a little bit, it was clear that it lacked substance.

It was really big. (At least that's what she said.) Seriously, it reminded me of a Chipotle or Sonic Super burrito in size. There were a ton of eggs. So much that you didn't really notice the bacon or cheese much. The beans tasted like spicy refried beans from a can and they were spread on too thick. This tasted more like a burrito a gringo would make at home.

This burrito was very filling. However, I would lighten up on the beans and make them from scratch. A little more bacon wouldn't hurt either. The green sauce was strong on jalapeño flavor and pretty hot.
With some help, this Joey could become a Ross.

Melis Taqueria-The Taco Love Shack

Melis Taqueria on Vickery between Hulen and Clover has the best breakfast burritos around. They're hearty in size and oh so delicious. I get the potato, egg and cheese burrito with beans...con todos.

It's served on a flour tortilla with scrambled eggs, buttery potatoes, white Mexican cheese, and a thin layer of retried beans on the tortilla, spread almost like mayonnaise; it's not overwhelming. The beans taste homemade. They provide a house made red and green sauce. I prefer the green tomatillo and jalapeño sauce. It's definitely got kick to it, so go easy at first.

The old house it's in looks like an old shack with a walk up window. I'm guessing some people have never eaten here because of the run down appearance. I'm perfectly fine with this. It helps keep the lines short. On any given day, you will find city workers in trucks and work boots, executives in slacks and ties, college students and everything in between. Good food appeals to everyone.

There are two picnic tables under the front porch and another outside under a tree along Vickery Blvd that provides a dismal view and traffic exhaust. Most take it to go. I highly recommend Melis. The fact that I eat there at least once a week should be testament to that.

It should also be noted that this is a "cash only" business. Be prepared.
